Trek the bamboo slopes of the Virunga volcanoes to spend an hour with mountain gorillas, framed by Kigali's hills and hospitality.
Rwanda has turned itself into one of the world's great conservation stories, and nowhere shows it better than Volcanoes National Park, where more than a dozen habituated gorilla families roam the forested slopes of the Virungas. This trip opens in Kigali, a green, orderly hillside capital worth two full days on its own, before heading north to Musanze for guided treks through bamboo and stinging nettle to sit, in near silence, a few metres from a family of mountain gorillas.
Trekking difficulty varies daily depending on which family you're assigned, so mornings begin with a briefing and a walking stick, and the climb itself can run from ninety minutes to four hours each way. Beyond the primary gorilla trek, the itinerary adds a golden monkey excursion in the bamboo forest and a community visit in a Virunga foothill village, giving a fuller picture of a country that has rebuilt itself around its wildlife and its people.
