Glass-roofed cabins, reindeer on the lake, and the green curtain shimmering above.

Waiting for the green curtain

In Finnish Lapland the aurora is a matter of patience and clear skies. From a glass-roofed cabin near Saariselka or Rovaniemi you can lie warm under the duvet and watch the sky, then bolt outside in your thermals when the green begins to shimmer and ripple overhead.

There is no schedule and no guarantee — that is part of the pull. When it comes, the whole sky seems to breathe, and no photograph you take will do it justice.

Making the trip work

  • Go between late September and March, on a multi-night stay to beat the cloud odds.
  • Fill the daylight with huskies, reindeer sleds or a snowmobile across a frozen lake.
  • Download an aurora-forecast app and dress in real layers — minus twenty is normal.

Even on a quiet night, Lapland delivers: reindeer on the ice, silence you can hear, and a sky so full of stars the aurora almost seems like showing off. Give it three or four nights and the odds tip firmly in your favour.
