Almaty is unusual among big cities in having genuine high mountains at its back door — the Trans-Ili Alatau range climbs to over 4,000 metres barely half an hour from downtown. This trip uses the city as a comfortable base for day hikes and cable-car rides into that range: the ski slopes and viewpoints of Shymbulak, the glacial cirque at Big Almaty Lake, and a full-day excursion to the turquoise Kolsai Lakes further east, often called the 'Pearl of the Tian Shan.'
It's the easiest trip in our Central Asia collection, built for travellers who want big alpine scenery without multi-day trekking commitment — most days combine a moderate walk with a chairlift or vehicle for the harder climbing. Evenings are spent back in Almaty's leafy streets, sampling Kazakh and Uyghur cuisine and browsing the Central State Museum, making this a good add-on before or after a longer Central Asian trek.
