Wake for the monks' alms procession, wander gilded temples, then drift two unhurried days downriver on a traditional Mekong slow boat.

Luang Prabang is Laos at its most serene: a UNESCO-listed peninsula of saffron-robed monks, French colonial shopfronts and gold-leafed wats set at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. This trip gives the old capital the time it deserves — dawn alms-giving on Sisavangvong Road, the climb up Mount Phousi for sunset, an evening at the night market — before it turns river-bound. From Luang Prabang you board a traditional wooden slow boat and spend two easy days drifting the Mekong to the Golden Triangle, sleeping overnight in the riverside village of Pakbeng, watching water buffalo, fishing weirs and jungle-clad hills slide past at a pace nothing else in the region matches.

It's an unhurried, low-impact way to cross Laos — no long bus rides, no fixed itinerary beyond the current — and it ends at the Thai and Myanmar borders, where the Mekong itself becomes the boundary between three countries. Best suited to travellers who want their days built around a temple bell schedule and a river current rather than an alarm clock.
