Climb the world's tallest red dunes and stand among the fossilised camel thorn trees of Deadvlei at first light.

The Namib is the oldest desert on Earth, and Sossusvlei is its centrepiece: a sea of star-shaped dunes, some over 300 metres high, glowing deep orange against a hard blue sky. This short, focused trip is built around getting you onto the dunes and into Deadvlei's cracked white clay pan before sunrise, when the light is at its sharpest and the tour buses haven't yet arrived, then giving the desert room to breathe for the rest of each day.

Beyond the dunes themselves, the itinerary threads through Sesriem Canyon's slot walls and out to the wild Atlantic coast at Swakopmund, taking in the seal colonies and shipwreck-strewn Skeleton Coast along the way. Distances are long and the roads are gravel, so this suits travellers happy to trade pavement for scenery and to rise before dawn for the reward of an empty dune ridge.
